Mersea Island Museum is an independent museum
established in 1976 and occupying purpose-built
premises in the centre of West Mersea, just to
the east of the Parish Church. The traditional
local activities of fishing, oystering, wild fowling
and boat building are represented. The reconstruction
within the museum of a typical weather-boarded
fisherman's cottage provides an interior display
centred on a Victorian coal-fired kitchen range,
with adjoining facilities for washing clothes using
old-fashioned manual equipment. |

The Eastbourne Lifeboat Museum is housed in the
RNLI boathouse, King Edwards Parade. Built in 1898
to commemorate the assassination of the well known
actor William Terris outside the Adelphi Theatre
in 1897. A display of newspaper cuttings of the
the time are in the museum. The building housed
an active lifeboat until 1924, when an exhibition
lifeboat was put on display. |

The Fishermen's Museum is housed in a former
church, built on the beach in 1854, to minister
to the local fishing community. The impressive
centrepiece is the Enterprise, built in 1912 as
one of the last of the Hastings sailing luggers.
The museum is very much at the heart of the local
community with photographs, model ships and boats,
fishing gear, historic paintings and much more,
including an albatross. Adjacent to the Museum
is the Edward and Mary, the first locally built
boat to be constructed with an engine installed
in 1919.

past and the history of the Shoreham area. It houses
a fine collection of archaeological material from
prehistoric to Roman times. Upstairs the story
of Shoreham comes up to date, including features
on its silent film industry, the beach and transport

how to collect rocks and fossils from the age

dinosaurs 135 million years ago; and how to
experience the rising sea level and changing
coastline and
massive sea defences; and where to wander through
the quaint streets of the medieval Cinque Port
of Hastings. |
